A cover letter generator that doesn't make things up.
Start with your resume and the role you’re applying for. HiringNow uses those details to help explain why your experience is relevant to the job.
Written from your resume
Add your resume and the job description. The letter connects what the job asks for to things you've actually done, in the job's own words where they're true of you.
Nothing made up
No invented numbers, employers or skills. Where a strong sentence needs a fact you didn't give, the letter leaves a bracketed blank for you to fill instead of a plausible guess.
Doesn't read like AI
The phrases that give a generated letter away are banned outright: "I am writing to express my interest", "passionate", "results-driven", em dashes. A check flags any that slip into your edits.
A draft without AI, too
Prefer to write it yourself? The starter draft builds the structure from what you typed, adds the skills you share with the job, and leaves the rest to you. Free, unlimited, no model involved.
Free downloads, no watermark
PDF, Word or plain text for an email or an application box. No trial that turns into a subscription, no account to download what you wrote.
Checks before you send
Length against what you picked, the company named, blanks left, stock phrases, a number somewhere, and the job's skills that are on your resume but missing from the letter.
How the AI cover letter generator works.
1
Paste the job
The title, the company and the job description. The posting is what the letter answers.
2
Add your resume
Upload a PDF or Word file, paste it, or use the one you made in our resume builder. It's read in your browser.
3
Say it in your words
Share why you’re interested in the role and one achievement you’d like to highlight. A couple of sentences is enough.
4
Write, edit, download
Write it with AI or start from the no-AI draft. Edit any paragraph, read the checks, then download PDF or Word.
A cover letter example, and where each line came from.
This fictional example shows how a letter can connect a candidate’s experience to a specific job. The achievements come from the sample resume, and the reason for applying comes from the candidate’s notes. Press “Try it with a sample” above to make it yourself.

Fabrikam Health
Re: Lead Product Analyst, Pricing
Dear Fabrikam Health hiring team,
I'm applying for the Lead Product Analyst, Pricing role at Fabrikam Health. Moving from per-seat to usage-based pricing is the problem I've spent the last two years on at Northwind Software, and I'd like to solve it for clinics.
At Northwind I led pricing research across three customer segments, including 240 customer interviews, and the new plans raised average contract value by $4,200. Before that I built the churn model that flags at-risk accounts 45 days earlier, which cut churn by 11%. Both were SQL and Python, with the results in Tableau for the people who had to act on them.
Your posting asks for forecasting under new price plans and A/B tests on packaging. I've run 35 A/B tests with a growth team, 12 of which shipped, and the churn model is a forecast at heart. I'm used to explaining the numbers to sales leaders who need a decision, not a chart.
I'd welcome the chance to talk about how I could help Fabrikam Health get its pricing change right. Thank you for your time.
Best regards,
Jordan Rivera
Cover letter format and template: four paragraphs, one page.
Use four short paragraphs to explain why you’re applying and what you can bring to the role. Keep the finished letter to one page unless the employer asks for something different.
01
Opening
The role, the company, and one real reason you want this job. Not praise: something specific you know about them or why the timing is right for you.
02
Proof
One or two results from your resume that match what the job asks for most, with the numbers. This is the paragraph that gets read.
03
Fit
The two or three things the posting stresses, and a line on how you've done each. Use the posting's words where they're true of you.
04
Close
Ask for a conversation and thank them. One or two sentences.
| Where | Length | Greeting | Also |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | One page, three to five short paragraphs | The hiring manager by name; otherwise "Dear Hiring Manager" | "Sincerely" or "Best regards" |
| United Kingdom | One A4 page, three to five paragraphs | By name; otherwise "Dear Sir or Madam" | "Yours sincerely" to a name, "Yours faithfully" to Sir or Madam |
| Germany | One side of A4 | By name where possible | Expect to send it with a photo and a signed, dated CV |
| EU (Europass) | One page, three paragraphs | Formal and polite | Simple fonts, 11 to 12 point |

Do cover letters still matter? What the numbers say.
A cover letter gives you room to explain why you’re interested in a role and how your experience relates to it. Research suggests that tailored letters can help, but the findings vary by employer, platform, and study.
53%
More interview callbacks for applications with a cover letter written for the job than for applications with none, across 7,287 test applications. A generic letter helped less.
ResumeGo field experiment, 2019–2020 (a resume-writing company)
1 in 117
Application forms that required a cover letter, in our check of 117 openings at 39 employers that hire through Greenhouse. 91% had a cover letter field. Optional, then, but usually there, and often read.
51%
How much the link between a tailored cover letter and a callback weakened after a large freelance site gave everyone an AI letter writer. Letters got better on average; employers leaned more on work history instead.
83%
Of 625 US hiring managers said they read most cover letters. It's a survey by a company that sells cover letter tools, so read it as an upper bound.
Left out on purpose: figures you'll see elsewhere that we couldn't trace to a source, such as “26% of recruiters read cover letters” and “90% of executives value them”.
AI cover letter generator FAQ.
Can ChatGPT write me a cover letter?
Yes. Give it your resume, the job description, and a few notes about why you’re applying. Review the draft for accuracy and edit the wording before sending. HiringNow brings those inputs, editing tools, and PDF or Word downloads into one place.
How do I generate a cover letter from my resume?
To generate a cover letter from your resume, give a generator three things: your resume, the job description, and a line on why you want the job. HiringNow's free AI cover letter generator reads a PDF or Word resume in your browser, writes the letter from it and the posting, and leaves bracketed blanks for any fact it doesn't have. You edit the draft, then download it as PDF or Word.
What should a cover letter include?
A cover letter should include four parts: an opening that names the role and gives a real reason you want it, one or two results from your resume that match what the job asks for most, a short line on the job's other key requirements, and a close that asks for a conversation. Keep it to one page, three to five paragraphs, addressed to a person where you can.
Do employers check if a cover letter is AI-generated?
Some employers say they look for AI-written cover letters, and career advisers at MIT point to the giveaways: em dashes, a formulaic shape, and polish with no person in it. No study we found measures how accurately employers can tell. Substance matters more: a letter with a real reason and a real result reads as yours. Research on AI cover letters found time spent editing went with better outcomes.
Do I still need a cover letter?
You usually don't need a cover letter, but send one when the application form has a field for it. In a test of 7,287 applications, letters written for the job got 53% more callbacks than no letter. In HiringNow's check of 117 application forms, almost none required a cover letter, but nine in ten asked for one. Skip it when there's nowhere to put it.
How long should a cover letter be?
A cover letter should be one page at most: in practice 250 to 400 words, in three to five short paragraphs. Career services at MIT, Harvard and Stanford, the UK's National Careers Service and Europass all say one page. For an email body or an application text box, shorter is better; HiringNow's generator has a short length for that.
Who do I address a cover letter to if there's no name?
If there's no name, address a cover letter to "Dear Hiring Manager", which is what US career centers recommend; first look for the hiring manager on the posting or on LinkedIn. In the UK, "Dear Sir or Madam" with "Yours faithfully" is the traditional form. Avoid "To whom it may concern". HiringNow's generator uses "Dear [company] hiring team" when it has the company but no name.
Is a CV a cover letter?
No, a CV is not a cover letter. A CV is the British and European word for a resume: the record of your experience. A cover letter, in the UK sometimes called a "covering letter", is the short letter sent with it, saying why you want this job and why you fit it.
Does an ATS read my cover letter?
An ATS stores your cover letter but, as far as we found, doesn't parse it. Greenhouse, for instance, takes a cover letter as a file or as pasted text, and some systems make it searchable, but no hiring system we found turns a cover letter into structured data the way it does a resume. Where a form offers a text box, pasting plain text is the safest choice.
Is HiringNow's AI cover letter generator free?
Yes, HiringNow's AI cover letter generator is free: three AI-written letters per browser with no account, then a free sign-in for more. The no-AI starter draft, editing, the checks and every PDF or Word download are free without limit, with no watermark and no trial. Nothing turns into a subscription.
What happens to my resume when I use HiringNow's cover letter generator?
Your resume and letter stay in your browser when you use HiringNow's cover letter generator: the resume is read on your own device, and your inputs are kept in your browser's storage so you can come back. When you ask the AI to write, the resume, the job and your notes go to HiringNow's server and then the model, and the letter comes back. None of it is stored or logged.
Can HiringNow write a cover letter for a UK or European job?
Yes, HiringNow's cover letter generator writes for UK and European jobs: pick the country and the letter switches to British spelling, the date written day first, A4 paper and British sign-offs. For Germany, expect to send a photo and a signed, dated CV with the letter; the letter itself stays the same.
Should I write a cover letter if it's optional?
Yes, write a cover letter when it's optional, if you can make it specific. A generic letter adds little; one that names the company, gives a real reason and shows your most relevant result is the kind that moves callbacks. If you can't say anything specific about the role, a short note beats a long generic one.
What's the best AI cover letter generator?
The best AI cover letter generator writes from your own record and lets you keep the file. Look for four things: it reads your resume and the job description, it won't invent results, it lets you edit every line, and it downloads a PDF or Word file without a trial or an account. Many well-known generators give a text file free and charge for the PDF.
